The major issue in pump system design is design margin. How does one identify design margin and what are the ramifications of incorrect margin? If a system is optimized, won’t it have less design margin? Consider this, design margin comes from one of two sources, intentional margin, this is margin that is specifically included in the design requirements this margin is quantifiable. The other source is unintentional margin, which is derived from imperfect design methods and is not quantifiable. The purpose of optimization is to reduce the unintentional margin to zero.
